Does anybody display their paintings for sale in a shop, cafe, etc? I assume if you do it would be common to pay them a percentage commission on any sales.

Is there a ‘standard’ percentage or what do you think a reasonable starting number is for negotiation? I’m UK based but would imagine it may be relatively standard across various countries.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

I know that galleries usually buy from artists and they resell at whatever price they like. Sorry that cannot help more.

I would say start with calculating your cost to paint, deliver and hang in that gallery/cafe. Add what profit you want per painting or per month of 5 or 10 sales. Then calculate back from this sum to tell what % you want to give to that gallery/cafe. Just don’t drop beyond your actual costs after sharing.

Probably searching ready to use contracts on internet as some guidance to the points to consider.

Sunnylady also just googled galleries and I was wrong. They do not buy they sort of loan and apx 50% goes to gallery.

Thanks Sunnylady. Sound advice especially around the contracts - that probably wouldn’t have crossed my mind.

Will get my calculator out 😀

We are regulars where I am displaying my work, and they have a lot of other local artists displaying in there as well - we make an extra effort to head there after a sale to eat. Honestly even if I don’t sell anything we are eating there maybe once every other week if not more. I think it can all depend on where you go and the arrangement you make with the place. My cafe did not want a scent of mine for commission, they just appreciate us being in there consistently and the customers adore seeing the changing work on the walls.
