Hello,
Can the Winsor & Newton Artists line of oil paints be used in lieu of Bob Ross paints? Is the WN paint thick enough? I don't care for the way Dixon mixes the Ross paints. Way too much oil.
Thanks for your input.

All i ever used, can't fault them.
jmwsr47 Yes, sure!
jmwsr47 What is Dixon? Are they the UK or NY manufacturer (there seems to be a switch going on). Agreed on the BR paint consistency though. There’s a new thread on the forum discussing just that issue.
To your question: yes you can use WN Artists, however they’re sometimes a bit soft. Their Winton line is super firm. If you do go the WN Artists route, try their metallics. I got a tube of Iridescent White and love, love, love how it sparkles. (Check out their masterclass videos too - https://www.winsornewton.com/uk/masterclass/metallic-oil-paint/ )
I think the BR ones were created specially for wow technique, and are a particular consistency, I have some of the other brands, I’d prefer to have all the same brand but many are out of stock or can’t get them at a reasonable price, so I have to settle.
Colour wise, I’m sure Thalo blue is the same which ever brand, but maybe the consistency is a little different.
Nope.. there are color shifts between brands at times. Bob's sap green is not the same as Winsor/Newton sap green. The Thalo blues are different.. not in color but in opacity. Bob's are not as translucent as other brands. I made up swatches some months ago between Bobs paints, Winsor, Gamblin and Artist Loft. It was pretty interesting to see the differences. Some colors have a huge shift between brands.. like Paynes Grey for example. one brand will be definitely to the blue side while another will be to the grey side. If you are like me and mix up your brands, I would spend an afternoon with some 100lb poster board, gesso and your paints to make up swatch cards. Its fun and can really help
Here are a couple swatch cards.. Paynes grey.. oil vs acrylic and 3 of Sap Green
I did only cad yellow for different brands. but you are so right and it is very professional and so helpful to do color panels and color mixes panels!
