Blasphemy, I know. But I've been using the Bob Ross Titanium White, and while the thickness is really good for mountains, has anybody else noticed that it might be too thick to use for other things??? Having difficulty with clouds and putting highlights on trees and bushes because of it leading to mud mixing. I've tried thinning it with a little paint thinner, but even just using a little makes it too thin in my opinion. Anybody have a similar experience?
Titanium White.... Too Thick????
Dont use thinner.. get some linseed oil. A dab will do yah Liquid white also works well for dabbing on some highlights. Lately I have been using a DIY mix of stand oil and gum turpentine.. 2-1.. but that's getting more advanced than what BR was teaching.
Or just get a tube of non ross paint like Gamblin Radiant White which is very creamy out of the tube. I love how it works for highlights.
wybnormal Why the oil instead of the thinner?
Any number of reasons.. but the biggest is that the thinner can have bad effects on the underlaying paint. It can also break down the paint film to wear it will come off after it dries. The linseed oil in fact is what most oils already use to carry the pigment. I find it to much more controllable and quit using thinner for anything other than cleaning a brush. Some like to use poppyseed oil which is much more clear ( not yellow) as linseed oil.. walnut oil, safflower oils are all used too.
I just got a new tube of Bob Ross titanium white and the consistency is much different than the tube I bought a month ago. The current one is impossibly thick. It feels like painting with nearly dry road tar. Do they keep changing manufacturers? The current one is made in New York while the prior one was made in the UK.
Good question.. all my BR paint is UK origin.. but I've moved on to other makers of paint.. I really like Gamblin and Winsor/newton paints. I'm tempted to try Rembrandt after watching a video. I've gotten very good results with Blick's house brand of paint too.. The only paint I would not recommend to a beginner is Artist Loft ( Michael's house brand) but I've used it in a pinch and it can work within certain boundaries.
