Bubbling Brook

joha59 03 Feb 2025

Bubbling streams are not my favorite subject to paint, these always looks a bit unnatural to me, we don't have them very often in the flat country I am living in, but maybe also because of the smaller canvasses I use, I ignore most of them, but I wanted to paint this episode so I had to do it. I liked the background with the lightsource and tree- and trunc indications in this black canvas painting. In this video Bob tells loud and clear not to use terpentine (I still do after every painting session lol) because it leaves something in the brush which can only be cleaned with soap and water and he does not recommend to clean natural brushes with soap and water, I blew my first 1 inch brush completely up by doing it. So I did not use the 1 inch brush a long time, also not in this one, I use a cheap kind of spalter brush with natural hairs instead and throws it away after some sessions. I struggled a bit with the grass in this painting, I assume I used too much oil for setting up the background colors, Bob did not use clear for this, on canvaspanel 30 x 24 cm.

Excellent!

Your grass always looks good to me. I believe there's always a use for an old or damaged brush, you just have to figure out how to use the effects they create I guess. You did a good job, I don't know how you get them so good on small canvas.

It does feel natural to me! Love the atmosphere on this one, and I really like the stream too! well done!

Beautiful work and you really nailed the stream Jos✌️
