Shades of Grey

"Shades of Grey"
May 8, 2024
Oil on canvas
50x40cm

I felt like I was struggling with the mountains when painting "Autumn Fantasy", so I decided to do another moutains painting.
This one has several layers of mountains, so it was a good candidate for practicing mountains. And since I also wanted to try one of the so-called colourblind paintings I decided on this scene.

I've always felt like the distant evergreens that Bob put in were either to large for those mountains or the mountains were just rocks instead of mountains.
And there's something not quite right with the perspective. Things feel too large or too small.
So I decided to leave out the large evergreens in the distance, but there's still something off with the perspective. I think it mostly has to do with the peninsula on the right.

But whatever, I had good fun painting this scene and it was good practice.
I also, like Bob, made the evergreens using the knife.

I think its great. I LOVE your highlights in the Trees, and entire Foreground. Really solid work there.

Personally, I think your Mountains are excellent in themselves.

Very well done.

Very nice! This composition can become a mud mixer, but you avoided that with skill. Great textures (I also especially like your pine trees).

love this one!

@Aaron:
Thank you. <3
As for the mountains, I like how I managed to make the one furthest away the lightest one.
It can be tricky to get the right lightness/darkness when working forward. It's easy to start too dark.
The middle range of mountains almost came out too dark.

Thank you! <3
True, mudmixing was lurking, ready to attack. I'm glad I managed to avoid it, especially when starting on the evergreens. I managed to layer on the dark colour without disturbing the white on the mountains much. Pfew.

@Shadowlink:
Thank you! <3

Great painting and I would echo your own response to Aaron, I love how you came forward darker and more detailed with your mountains. I love it!👍✌️

Great rendering of this composition, Titia! The variation of underpainting in the mountains is spot on, and I really like how your knife trees turned out. (I chickened out on that part and opted for a fan brush!)
