Winter Glow

Tom0779 19 Jan 2023

I am in winter mood currently. Maybe this is because in the part of Austria I’m living at there is no winter at all this year.
I had this episode on my painting list for a long time already, especially because of the (in my opinion) challenging building. Also I wanted to try something from season 1, which most people don’t like.
My opinion about this episode:
I think this has quite a lot going on. One can see that in this first season Bob is still influenced very strong by his mentor Bill Alexander. The way he is creating trees and the foliage is the same like Bill did. Also avoiding the liner brush wherever possible was typical for Bill as well as hitting the canvas toughly with the knife to create sticks. In my opinion this building is not so easy because of the roof. If you don’t get the angles right it will always look out of perspective. The roof shape is not allowing any tolerance here.
Overall I think a nice episode to paint. And because of the colors in the sky really something different. A lot of people are criticizing the first season because of different reasons(background music, colors, etc..) I can live with it.
This is oils on canvas board 20 x 28 in (50 x 70 cm)

I think you have done a great job with this and the building is the star of the show, perfect shape and good shading, mountain is lovely, sky is awesome. πŸ‘

Thanks a lot Nivek, your feedback is really nice :)

Another beautiful painting Tom!
Since you were using a 50x70cm canvas I was wondering: how do you feel about that format? I have been primarily using 40x50 or 50x60 but have been thinking about switching to 50x70 since it would be closer to the landscape format Bob uses.

Thanks a lot Marc.
Actually I use a lot of different sizes. Most common I use 40 x 50 or 40 x 60. Also quite often I use 50 x 60 (if I paint portrait wise) or 50 x 70. I have one 60 x 80 but not decided yet what I paint on this. And for ovals I use 30 x 40, as I have a perfect oval template for this size.
I think 50 x 70 is a bit bigger than Bob uses, I think his are about 45 x 60. But it is a super size for all his scenes. It made me use the 2 inch brush more frequently :)

Goodness Tom... just outstanding! Your painting looks much better than Bob's. Your barn and angles are just perfect! Your paintings have so much depth and realism. You are my painting crush! LOL!! 😁

Thanks for your isight Tom! I think I'll just have a go at 50x70 then soon. 😊

Wow thanks Nancy, your feedback really motivates me to paint much more :) I always liked buildings and with watercolors I painted a lot of them. So I got some practice experience with them.

You are welcome Marc.

Hey Tom Thats not one of my favorites but the way you paint ,makes me cry πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜ƒ. Outstanding . Absolutly great work

very nice painting T.I love the cabin.cheers.P

Thanks a lot Dirk. I hoped to make people smile when they see my paintings :)
I have now an almost 3 years painting experience with oils in this technique, that pays off now. As Bob say, the more you practice the better you get :)

Thanks a lot Sandy, always happy to hear from you!

Thanks Pietro, I like to paint bars/cabins ;)

Stunning as usual!!

Very nice Tom. I like your mountain shape better than Bobs.

Many thanks Tony for your support.

Thanks a lot Matt, I thought I make it a bit more interesting using a small nylon flat brush to add more details to the shape.

Awesome painting Tom! All around is beauty but the barn is the star of the show for me! Love the color and shape of the dry grasses behind the barn too!

So lovely Tom! I personally like the color palette Bob used and you did wonderfully in capturing it. I agree that it is hard to get through the season one episodes with the weird music background! And I also find it interesting to watch how Bob begins to adopt his own style as the seasons progress.

Thanks a lot Brian. I like painting buildings. The grass color is made from alizarin crimson mixed with sap green.

Thanks Pam. I mainly ignore the music and I often paint just using the books πŸ˜€
