I did this as an experiment with acrylics to see if my nephew could use acrylics instead of oil. I struggled with it and it did not cooperate, but I finished it.

Acrylics are challenging for BR technique due to fast drying time. Beginners start oil painting and finish it within 2-4 hours and paint stays movable during this time.
You can better try gouache, not acrylic gouache though. It also does not blend easily but when upper layers put on top it allows some intermixing with layers below creating unity in color. Also easy to clean. Only difference it needs to be premixed on the pallet with a lot of white gouache to allow this flexibility of paint. Gouache is good on thick watercolor paper which saves a lot of space rather than using canvas.
But if your nephew is 15-16+ just explain safety rules to him and go with oil.
