Hello dear Artists!

Finally I am writing another article to share what I learnt along the way.

I live in Guyana now and everything here is extremely expensive or not available in country when we talk about artistic materials for oil painting.

One of them is linseed oil. I could not find it locally at all. So long story short I got virgin linseed oil food grade abroad and brought with me, it was not meant to be eaten but to be processed into artistic medium.

I used guidelines by Tad Spurgeon.(thanks a lot for that extensive guideline!)  It was a learning curve, but I got what I needed. In short it involved sand, salt and hot water and a lot of waiting.

Now I had my own medium prepared, but I wanted to compare it with other commercial oils I had at the moment.

My contestants were:

1. Home made linseed oil

2. Stand oil Nevskaya Palitra

3. Linseed oil from Windsor and Newton

4. Liquin original ( was added much later)

Please see the photo below to judge about yellowing of oils.

I kept the canvas sheet attached to canvas and stored it as I would store my finished painting sometimes at the light conditions, sometimes buried under 5 other canvases in my mini studio.

To provide agenda to the photo.

Home made product was done with 3 washes, thus you see raw oil, 1st and 3rd wash and final product.

I used thin and thick application to see better what happens depending on thickness of the medium as I do use glazing from time to time and my glazing is done with linseed oil.

Stand oil - supposed to yellow less  than normal linseed oil

Refined oil is supposed to have less contamination and yellow less than normal linseed oil.

Alkyd is not supposed to yellow at all.

Long story short no matter commercial or home made or even alkyd medium - everything yellows. Thus more attention with whites and blues needed when adding medium. For me it is critical as I like painting seascapes in blueish colors.

I wish I could get my hands on non yellowing oils but it will be another story for another article.

If you read this and had your home experiment with other types of oils please do share.

Cheers,
